Regulations, safety, competition, and fuel economy will drive the need for technology in automobiles. Indian OEMs who are now waking up to this reality and have started scouting consultants and tech providers. "OEMs will be the leaders. Although the technology is being validated and tested outside India, efforts are on to introduce it to the OEMs in the country," said Anup Sable, VP automotive and embedded tools at KPIT Cummins. The challenge in this kind of tech adoption is whether the Indian consumer is willing to pay the price, since 30% of the total cost of vehicle in the high end segment is attributed to electronics and software, and in the lower end segment, it is between 3-5%. "Safety, fuel efficiency and driver comfort will augment the need for electronic cars.
