The interior is arguably the most sumptuously appointed D5 Touring in the UK, boasting not only smooth and lightly treated Ivory Nappa hide on the eminently supportive Comfort Seats, centre console and door panels, but a full leather dash top roll. These elements combine to create an airy and accessible yet very sophisticated ambience in which to pass time and miles. The feeling of light openness is further enhanced by the Ivory headlining, an option rarely seen these days. Equally rare, and usually only seen in the V12 7 Series models are the ceramic control surfaces which not only provide an enhanced texture experience over their plastic counterparts, but are far less vulnerable to heat for greater user comfort. ALPINA enhancements to the interior include a unique numbered build plaque adoring the headlining, signature blue dials and headrests embossed with the ALPINA roundel by the Saddlery at Buchloe. Similarly, a hand covered steering wheel with green and blue stitching reminds the driver he is piloting something very different from the norm.

The D5’s real showpiece however, is the thoroughness of its engineering. ALPINA’s engineering team of 70 developed the D5 over two years, using a combination of existing BMW parts where suitable and developing their own when not. The brakes for example, come from a Middle Eastern spec V12 7 Series, while to cope with the extra torque, the driveshaft comes from a Rolls-Royce Ghost. The engine features two ALPINA-specific twin-scroll turbochargers that work in parallel, while the intake was optimised for high, unrestricted induction rates. To cope with the extra heat generated and the stresses of running for a tank of fuel at a time at 170+ mph, the cooling package was significantly uprated and now boasts a dedicated oil cooler, secondary radiator and 30 percent larger primary radiator, in addition to an innovative intercooler arrangement. ALPINA specific engine management software complements and optimises these changes, with the strengthened driveshaft and uprated torque converter and solenoids in the eight speed gearbox ensure progress is smooth, effortless and reliable. ALPINA have re-engineered the BMW Variable Damper Control with ALPINA-specific spring rates and Bilstein dampers, calibrated for an extra cossetting ride in Comfort Plus and even sharper handling in Sport. All modes however are superbly resolved and lend the D5 the long distance comfort of a luxury limousine combined with a deftness of handling that belies its size.
Indeed, such a complete proposition is the D5, Autocar declared it their ‘favourite long distance companion.’ The D5 appeals to the head as well as the heart, easily managing over 40 mpg (officially 47.9), emitting 155g/km of CO2, while strong residuals make for a very attractive total cost of ownership. Not bad for a large estate that will accelerate to 62 mph in 5.3 seconds and exceed 170 mph…
