Alonso fastest in wet Spa practice By Simon StrangFriday, August 27th 2010, 09:38 GMT Fernando Alonso put Ferrari at the top of the times as first practice for the Belgian Grand Prix was significantly affected by a large dose of typical Spa weather. Alonso's initial benchmark time of 2m01.223s, set halfway through the 90-minute session, allowed him to eclipse title rivals Lewis Hamilton (McLaren) and Sebastian Vettel (Red Bull). Shortly after setting his time, Alonso then reported on the radio that the rain from Stavelot up to Blanchimont had become much worse, and pitted. Within minutes the track was saturated by an ocean of rain and everybody else followed suit. Several drivers emerged from the pits in the last 10 minutes of the session, as the biblical weather instantly replaced itself with blue skies and puffy clouds, but the track was so saturated that improvements looked unlikely, as Felipe Massa proved by running wide at Pouhon. But Alonso was having none of that and went faster still by lapping the majestic Belgian circuit in 2m00.797s fastest - as if just to make a point. Hamilton did not go out again, but his lap was good enough to keep him second fastest. The rain did not stop the F-duct equipped Robert Kubica from improving either as the Renault man jumped to third in the final minutes. Vettel was fourth, ahead of Adrian Sutil, who is always good in these conditions. The German was fifth fastest for Force India having battled for the top spot early on with Toro Rosso's Jaime Alguersuari, who slipped down the order to 16th. Jenson Button was not one of those drivers who went out, and thus dropped to sixth for McLaren. The world champion was followed by Hungaroring winner Mark Webber (Red Bull), Sauber's Kamui Kobayashi and Rubens Barrichello, who left it late to set a time for Williams. Mercedes' Micheal Schumacher completed the top 10. Despite the weather, no one delivered their car back to the pits broken - though there were predictably several offs, notably for Schumacher, Heikki Kovalainen and Massa.
Alonso fastest again in second practice By Simon StrangFriday, August 27th 2010, 13:37 GMT Fernando Alonso pulled together a fantastic final lap to deny Adrian Sutil the fastest lap of Friday's second free practice session for the Belgian Grand Prix, following a bizarre climax to the session. Practice was stopped for more than 10 of the last 15 minutes while organisers looked for some spectators who had strayed in to a dangerous area. A frustration for the drivers who had waited all day for a dry track. Once waved out, the drivers then had to wait at the end of the pitlane as the light appeared to get stuck on red and another precious minute was lost before the they were finally allowed onto the track - with less than three minutes to go. Ferrari's Fernando Alonso and Felipe Massa had managed to get to the front of that queue, giving themselves a distinct advantage for what was a last-dash flier. Behind Alonso and Sutil, Lewis Hamilton ended the day third fastest ahead of Robert Kubica, Massa and Sebastian Vettel. Jenson Button was seventh quickest, Pedro de la Rosa eighth, Rubens Barrichello ninth and Kamui Kobayashi made it two Saubers in the top 10. The session began with the track damp but it dried steadily through the 90 minutes, bar a very brief shower at the beginning which caught out Timo Glock and Vitantonio Liuzzi. The Italian went off at Rivage and was able to bring his Force India back to the pits for a front wing replacement, but the Virgin driver's day was run after he thumped the barrier sideways at Turn 9. It was one of those practices where things changed frequently, including the temperature, track conditions, time order and even the colour of the sky – thus it depended when you were out as to who was quickest. Alonso had made the first impact on the times when he became the first to switch to intermediates. Not long after that, team-mate Massa shaved a couple of seconds off that to lap a 1m58.311s. Michael Schumacher meanwhile proved that opposite lock is possible through the compression at the damp Eau Rouge. Twenty minutes later, Jaime Alguersuari became the first person to go to a set of hard slicks, and then very quickly the times began to tumble significantly. Then, frankly, the form was dictated by when drivers were on track as the dry line became more pronounced. Button's stint gave him control, for example, only for Hamilton to go to the top with a 1m49.248s, and then Sutil – who had been consistently impressive all day – moved ahead of them all with a 1m49.157s. And that's where he remained until the red flag came out with 15 minutes to go.
