Mercedes has released a more in-depth description of its newly developed turbodiesel 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine powering the E 220d.
Daimler is paving the way for a new family of turbodiesel engines with the new OM 654 debuting on the 2016 E 220d on sale this spring. It’s the first all-aluminum four-cylinder diesel engine from Mercedes and manages to be around 13% more economical than the previous 2.1-liter unit. Displacement has been reduced to two liters and weight is down from 447 lbs (202.8 kilograms) to 371.2 lbs (168.4 kg) in a more compact size.
Moreover, the motor generates lower noise levels and fewer vibrations as a result of the newly implemented technology. It takes advantage of the fourth-gen common rail injection and has received steel pistons with stepped combustion bowls along with NANOSLIDE cylinder coating.
Aside from being more frugal and refined, the 2.0-liter unit is also more powerful as output has increased from the 2.1-liter’s 168 horsepower (125 kilowatts) to 192 hp (143 kW) at 3,800 rpm. The maximum torque of 295 pound-feet (400 newton meters) is delivered through the nine-speed automatic transmission from 1,600 rpm to 2,800 rpm.
In E 220d guise, the 2016 Mercedes E Class will cover the sprint to 62 miles (100 kilometers) per hour in 7.3 seconds before topping out at 149 mph (240 kph). As for fuel consumption, it needs 4.7 - 4.3 liters / 100 km in the city, 4.1 - 3.6 liters on the highway, and 4.3 - 3.9 liters in the combined cycle, with CO2 emissions varying between 112 to 102 g/km.
The OM 654 turbodiesel is part of a new family of modular engines that will eventually power the company’s entire range of cars and vans. The units will be offered in different states of tune, in longitudinal and transverse layouts, as well as in cars equipped with a front-wheel drive layout, RWD, and AWD.
Mercedes mentions the new engines have been engineered to meet future emissions legislation (RDE - Real Driving Emissions) and come with a multi-way exhaust gas recirculation. The turbodiesels are AdBlue-compatible and all of the parts related to efficient emissions reduction are mounted directly on the engine.
The E Class equipped with the OM 654 engine is slated to go on sale this spring and will kick off at €47,124 in Germany.
